Print Management Systems
The John Deere Calendar Project.
This imprint project was done in partnership with Deere's agency who designed the calendar and provided artwork for web sites.
They also operated an order center that actively marketed the calendar to Deere
dealers nationally and in Canada. Orders were taken via fax, phone, and the web.
Multiple Sells-built web sites were
used in this project, with various access levels for Deere and the Sells management,
production, and Digital Products staffs.
Sells:
- built an order management web site to collect dealer orders.
- processed the imprint and order data
- printed over 1500 calendar variations
- shipped and tracked the orders globally
- provided billing data to Deere.
The ordering web site allowed dealers to easily repeat their order from the previous year,
edit data from a previous order, create a new imprint design, even spread their order
over multiple stores. Staff offered telephone support to Deere dealers to guide them
through the ordering and imprint design process. Using "live" support significantly reduced
order errors and often lead to increased orders.
A project management web site provided real-time statistics as the project progressed so
that Hellman could gauge program success. Additional marketing efforts such as telemarketing
and faxed reminders were done by the agency to make sure the project goals were hit.
As with the Ace project, several custom Sells Digital Tools were used to flow imprint data
into our Computer-to-Plate system. Minimal overhead time was required through the
pre-press and printing parts of the project even though there were over 1500 variations of the same
basic calendar.
Various Sells Digital Tools guided the orders through our bindery,
making sure the many printing and packaging configurations were exactly what was ordered. Orders
generally shipped same day as binding, with a minimum of handling.
Once packages shipped, tracking information was available through a web site so any problems could
be resolved quickly. Both UPS, FedEX, and truck freight data were collected.
Deere required detailed accounting data so they could bill participating dealers in
this program. Deere was given production accounting information that determined their
cost for the program. This information was easily exported from databases, that had been driving the
various project web sites, according to the formats Deere preferred.
