Training Classes
The classes listed below are offered to our customers free of charge and taught by our on-staff Adobe Certified Instructor. We offer these same classes to non-customers. There's no better way to learn than from someone with real-world experience who has a real passion for teaching.
INSTRUCTOR
James Wamser is an Adobe Certified Instructor and has been with Sells Printing Company for over 15 years providing training and technical support for Sells’ customers, as well as its prepress department. James has been working with Adobe InDesign since October 1998, almost 1 year before the release of version 1.0. He teaches InDesign at Waukesha County Technical College in Wisconsin and is an author of InDesign CS5: Print Production Guidelines at Lynda.com. James has spoken at a number of industry events and is the co-chair of the Milwaukee InDesign User Group. He is totally committed to helping meet the ever-changing technical challenges of transforming designers’ concepts into beautiful printed pages as seamlessly and cost-effectively as possible.
CLASSES
Adobe Photoshop CS5 In this class, you learn the fundamentals of Photoshop by working with layers and channels, including their use when color-correcting images. We also cover cropping, image resolution and basic selection techniques.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 | Advanced Class This class covers some of the more advanced operations and concepts including filters, clipping paths, vector objects and more complex selections. We cover color settings and how they affect your images when converting from RGB to CMYK.
Adobe Illustrator CS5 In this class, we go over the basic tools in Illustrator, learning how to draw and edit objects, position items accurately, apply fills and strokes, and then save the artwork for use in other applications such as InDesign.
Adobe Illustrator CS5 | Advanced Class This class covers some of the more complex tools and concepts such as working with multiple artboards, masking, compound paths, blends, patterns, and use of the transformation tools. We also cover Effects, Live Paint, Live Trace, and transparency in gradients.
Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Professional In this class, we cover the Advanced Print Production Tools including Preflight, Output Separations and Convert Colors. We demonstrate how to make minor changes to a PDF file using TouchUp Text and TouchUp Object Tools.
Adobe InDesign CS5 This class covers best practices for document construction and sets the foundation for building files correctly for professional publishing. We cover Master Pages, Layers, Object, Character and Paragraph Styles and how they can help you work more efficiently.
Adobe InDesign CS5 | Advanced Class This class covers the powerful features of InDesign including Live Preflight and Smart Guides. We also cover the more advanced features including Nested Styles and GREP. We finish by Exporting PDF files for commercial printing, explaining the various settings including the differences between PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4, among others.
QuarkXPress 8.0 Discover the many new features Quark has introduced in their latest release. We also cover how to create PDFs for prepress directly from QuarkXPress.
Color Management The key to complete color management is to address the capabilities of various devices (monitors, scanners, printers) to display or print within the same “gamut” or color space. This class looks at the hardware and software that can be used to obtain predictable and consistent color.
Preflight Properly preflighting a print job eliminates the “trial and error” approach. Learn what the most common errors are and how to avoid them. Also learn how to use software such as Markzware FlightCheck®, Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Professional, and Adobe InDesign CS4 to assist you in not only preflighting a job, but in collecting all the elements needed to output it.
Mac OS X and Font Management Learn the Best Practices for using and managing fonts in Mac OS X, along with the latest font management applications and other utilities.
